In Sicily, she’s known as Mamma Etna. Yes, she is a *she*, if even the word for volcano in Italian, vulcano, is masculine. Etna is a great mother. She is massive, and her influence and impact on life in Sicily – – particularly the east side of the island – – is significant. Etna creates her own microclimate. At 11,000 feet above sea level, her four active craters create a landscape rich with minerals and weather that are conducive to exceptional agriculture. In other words, she provides! Etna is well-known for chestnuts, honey, porcini mushrooms, apples, pears, cherries, and more… but most of all for its excellent wines. So, a trip to Sicily is truly not complete without an excursion to explore her lava tubes and extinct craters (you can walk on the old ones at 6,000 feet above sea level) and a winery tour and tasting/pairing. We’ll show you the way! All of our tours that are hosted on eastern Sicily include experiences on Etna.
